A cold shower on a Tuesday morning almost never means the whole heater is dead. On an electric tank, hot water comes from two heating elements and two thermostats wired in a chain. Check the breaker — both legs
Go to the main panel. The water heater uses a double-pole (two-slot) breaker. Flip it fully off, then back on. Here's the catch most people miss: one leg can fail while the switch still looks "on." If you have a meter, you want to see 240V across the two hot terminals at the heater, and 120V from each leg to ground.
Press the reset once — and only once
Pop the upper access panel, fold back the insulation, and look for a red button on the thermostat. That's the high-limit (ECO). If it's popped, press it in. If it trips again within a day, stop pushing it — you have a shorted element or a stuck thermostat, and resetting only hides it.
Test the upper element
With power off, put a multimeter on the two element terminals (ohms setting). A healthy 4500-watt element reads roughly 12–13 ohms. Zero or "OL" (open line) means it's dead. Then touch one terminal and the tank body — any reading there means the element is shorted to ground and must be replaced.
If the element is good, suspect the thermostat
An element that reads fine but never warms up is starved by its thermostat. Upper thermostats fail more often than lower ones because they carry the switching load for both. A $15 replacement is cheaper and easier than you'd expect.
Only now check the lower half
If you had some hot water but it vanished fast, repeat the element and thermostat test on the lower access panel. This is the classic "warm shower that turns cold in five minutes" fault.

Do I need to drain the tank to replace an element?
