Replacing the dip tube, step by step

Keep the cold and hot ports straight, do not restore power to an electric element while the tank sits partly filled, and have a bucket ready under the cold inlet when you break the union.

1. Cut the power or set the gas control to OFFOn an electric heater, flip the double-pole breaker for the water heater to Off. Cold water sitting in that short run of pipe spills as the union parts. If the setup uses a rigid soldered stub, look for a threaded coupling or dielectric union rather than cutting pipe. Keep the nut and washer aside.
5. Unscrew the cold-inlet nippleGrip the cold-inlet nipple with a pipe wrench and turn it counterclockwise out of the tank. The old dip tube may come out with the nipple, or lift out separately now that the port is open. If the nipple is corroded or the threads are chewed, throw it out and use a fresh nipple on reassembly.
6. Pull the old dip tube and inspect itReach into the cold port with pliers and pull the old tube straight up. A tube that split in your hand, curled at the end, or came out 6 inches shorter than the tank is deep confirms the fault. If the tube crumbled, broken plastic pieces settle at the tank bottom and pass out the drain during the next scheduled flush.
7. Fit the new PEX dip tubeSlide the new cross-linked PEX tube into the cold inlet port until the top sits flush with the port opening. If the tube has a curled tip, orient it per the packaging so cold water releases gently across the bottom instead of jetting. The bottom of the tube should end about an inch above the tank floor; trim a long universal tube with a fine-tooth saw if needed.
8. Reinstall the nipple and reconnect the cold lineWrap the male threads of the nipple with 3 to 4 turns of PTFE thread-seal tape, clockwise so the tape tightens as the nipple threads in. Screw the nipple into the tank hand-tight plus a wrench-turn or two. Reconnect the cold-water line, snugging the union nut without cranking it. Overtightening brass cracks it.
9. Refill the tank and purge the airClose the tank drain if it is still open, then slowly reopen the cold shut-off above the tank. The hot tap upstairs will sputter and spit air for a few minutes as the tank fills, then run in a smooth, steady stream. Watch the cold inlet and nipple threads for weeps; snug any weep with a gentle wrench turn. Close the tap only after the stream runs steady.
10. Restore power or gas and confirm a hot drawOnly after the tank is completely full and the lines are purged do you flip the breaker back on or turn the gas control from Off to On and relight the pilot per the label. Give the heater a full cycle, 60 to 90 minutes for gas or 90 to 120 for electric, then run a hot tap and verify hot water runs strong with no flakes at the aerator.
